MORE UNNECESSARY AND HARMFUL TESTS or SCHOOL LIBRARIES AND LIBRARIANS?
This was posted by Peggy Robertson on facebook. OK to share.
As the school year begins and I send my oldest son to our public middle school, I am already full of questions. I just found out that there will be no librarian at Sam's middle school due to budget cuts. Really??? Not acceptable. It appears my tax dollars will be used to further fund testing, such as MAPS and TCAP, both of which do not improve student achievement, yet a staffed library, which DOES improve student achievement, will not be available to my eighth grader. So Pearson fills its pockets and my son is fed tests and denied a librarian? Again, not acceptable. I can see that this year is going to be a full year of blogging and trying to create awareness as my tax dollars continue to be used to do harm to our children. I will be opting Sam out of all high stakes tests as well as interim tests. I will opt Sam out of all pretest shenanigans And I will be sharing Stephen Krashen's research on reading, libraries and student learning. Interested in learning more? Join us. (unitedoptout.com)

FYI, here in Seattle, to add insult to injury, we lose library time because they use them during testing and they are closed to all other students who might want to use them.
