Home Schooling is Not Just for Zealots, Anymore

As the rich get richer, a growing number of home schoolers are not taught by moms and dads, but rather by full-time private tutors. A clip from the NY Times:
The United States Department of Education last did a survey on home schooling in 2003. That survey did not ask about full-time in-home teachers. But it found that from 1999 to 2003, the number of children who were educated at home had soared, increasing by 29 percent, to 1.1 million students nationwide. It also found that, of those, 21 percent used a tutor.

  1. DS, can you be more specific about what you mean by adult behavior?

  2. Good one. You had me going there for a minute. I honestly thought that you believed that all home educators are Right-wing fundamentalists who are homeschooling to make sure their kids never learn about Darwin. But then I realized you couldn't be that dumb. Right?

  3. Not speaking for DS, but what I know of homeschoolers and the behavior of homeschooled children, adult behavior would probably mean that the children act appropriately without having to be constantly reminded. Homeschoolers, because they aren't stuck in age segregated situations for the majority of their day, are able to instead move about in normal society learning how adults are expected to act. Because this is their model, they tend to emmulate this behavior. This is true of the zealot side of the homeschool equation as well as for those of us that are more liberal in our outlook.
