School Accountability and ED Culpability

There is no deeper conservative hypocrisy than the one that demands accountability in all things public and none in all things corporate. Think Halliburton.

In education, there is the tutoring fiasco within NCLB, which requires schools with the least amount of available funds to set aside for the tutoring industry 15-20 percent of federal dollars intended to fund programs for the poorest children. Any "scientifically-based" research to even suggest that the tutoring (more test prep) is working? Any accountability, Maggie and Grover? Zero. Nada:

Florida public schools could spend some $85 million on private tutoring for 347,778 low-income students next year, but whether these outside firms help children is anyone's guess.

Lee County has set aside roughly $650,000 for the service for next year; an estimated $570,000 was spent during the last school year . . .
