Hoping to gain control of local school policy, the charter school industry, Stand for Children, and private donors pumped over a million dollars into school board races in Nashville this summer. But all the robo calls, attack ad mailers, paid canvassers, and local media could not alter citizens' commitment to improving their public schools, rather than turning them over for charter conversion.
Will Pinkston, Jill Speering, Amy Frogge, and Christine Bugg all won their races against charter school advocates. Congratulations to supporters of public schools. And goodbye for now to the privateers, charter zealots, and corporate ed reformers. No doubt they will be back--there is too much money to be made if the charter industry can stack the deck in favor of privatization.
