"A child's learning is the function more of the characteristics of his classmates than those of the teacher." James Coleman, 1972

. . .a pupil attitude factor, which appears to have a stronger relationship to achievement than do all the “school” factors together, is the extent to which an individual feels that he has some control over his own destiny. James Coleman, 1966

Gates/NSVF in Newark

Here's the summary of a recently announced $3,000,000 grant from the Gates Foundation:
to support the planning and implementation of a data system for Newark Public School District that will support accountability and include measures for data driven instruction, teacher evaluation and growth models
The NewSchools Venture Fund is the recipient of the grant.
Earlier articles mentioned both Gates and NSVF would be spending money in Newark in tandem with Zuck's Bucks, but the Gates summary is more specific than prior coverage.
